How It’s Made.

So how was your weekend..?  Oh. Me… nothing much.  Seeing as I’ve been housebound since Friday with an insidiously insane hacking feverish flu, well. You can just imagine what my weekend was like.  Staring at the walls.. while my beloved family flitted out for a movie, fun with friends and OH YES a birthday party too.  While I sat in bed eating an entire chocolate cake.  It was SAD.  Fortunately, in my hours of whiling away time on the internet, I discovered the BEST THING EVER! and I am not joking.  If you, like me, enjoyed those segments of Mr. Rogers where the postman would bring videos of factory tours, then you, like me, will be AMAZED.  B/c on youtube I discovered the BEST SHOW EVERRR next to Dirty Jobs w/ Mike Rowe, and it is called HOW IT’S MADE.  Discovery Channel is simply the best channel in the history of the world. And I found there is a British version of this show as well.  Which probably came first, since we yanks have a tendency to steal all the very best Brit TV and make it our own. While never making it quite as well. ANYWAY. I learned How they make Ice Lollys (popsicle ice cream bars) and jelly beans and jelly (gummi) worms.  How pre-cooked bacon is manufactured, and how factory chicks are produced (cruelly).  How commercial cheesecakes are mass-produced (one of the best EVERR), and how to re-tread truck tires (awesome). How padlocks and condoms and HOT DOGS are made.  Oh My Goodnessss.  I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!  It’s a good thing we don’t have cable. or I’d never leave the house.

HERE is the show on how they make Pasta. It is worth 6 1/2 minutes.

  1. When I lived in Germany, I knew an Italian family. Each Saturday night the mother made her own pasta. They said that each family had their own pasta that they made.

The process seems very long and tedious to do in the tiny kitchen she had. She insisted on making her own and it was MUCH better than any store bought pasta that I have ever tasted.

This was facinating and my son and I love the whole American series along with Dirty Jobs and Mythbusters.

  2. What a neat story MTAE! I’ve never made my own pasta, but I’d imagine homemade is infinitely better than store bought. I loved seeing how they dry the pasta vertically to retain the flat shape. I find the whole thing very inspiring.

Hayden, Thank you for your solidarity. AND the lovely card. You’re the best! xo

PS: Where IS everybody?? It’s like a ghost town in here.
COME BACK – I’M NOT CONTAGIOUS ANYMORE !!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I think reading about your latest bout of illness gave me a case of sympathy crud! I dozed off in front of the computer yesterday, went home and went straight to sleep @ 5:00 p.m. and slept most of the night.

  4. lolz…traffic is down everywhere, dishy dah-link. i have no idea if everyone is home for the holidays or just depressed because of the holidays.

as for your favorite show…i much prefer HSN or QVC. ahahahah

  5. Oh poor Connie! Hope you are feeling well rested today. YOU WILL NEED IT FOR TOMORROW!

Heyya Curlz – how do you get QVC at the amish beach house?! have they gone interweb??

  6. Are you feeling better yet? I have some sort of nasty rash from the stuff I used to seal the marble, bleh. But my oldest son just took me to lunch, and that was soooo sweet, it cheered me up. but now I’m waaayyyy behind on cooking and yeck, I need to clean the bathroom, which just doesn’t go with cooking AT ALL!!! Anyway, I love this kind of stuff that tells you and better yet, shows you, how they do all sorts of stuff. Fascinating! Plus you’ve made me all nostalgic for when my sons loved Mr. Rogers to pieces. When my oldest got his first “real” haircut, he climbed up in the chair and gravely informed the stylist that he wanted his hair cut “Like Mr. Rogers, please!” It was so cute.
